The human body typically maintains a pH of 7.4. The pH scale measures how acidic or alkaline a substance is. The scale runs from 0 to 14 with 7 being neutral. Anything below 7 is acidic and anything above it is alkaline.
Alkaline water is believed to help the body from becoming too acidic from eating too many acidic foods or through prolonged exercise. Lactic acidosis is a condition caused from having too much lactic acid buildup from exercise. The kidneys and lungs are not capable of expelling the extra lactic acid from the body. It is not common and individuals who are healthy and exercise are not prone to the illness.
It is more common in diabetics, people with impaired liver, lung or kidney function, and those who chronically consume alcohol. Drinking alkaline water or consuming alkaline foods, such as asparagus, almonds, and beet root, can help the body maintain the proper pH.
Some athletes use alkaline-rich foods and alkaline water to reduce the potential of lactic acid muscle lock-up that can occur during high intensity competition and maximum exertion.
Exercise can make the body temporarily acidic, along with some foods including soft drinks, fried foods, and bacon. There are those who believe that keeping the body in a balanced or slightly alkaline state can help inhibit the growth of some cancers that thrive in an acidic environment. This has not been definitively proven.
Whether one replaces more soft drinks with water that ranges from 7.0 to 7.2 or alkaline water which runs between 7.4 and 8.8 pH does the body a favor.
There have been studies that indicate alkaline water is beneficial for some people. There have been several studies that found alkaline water helps deactivate pepsin, an enzyme that causes acid reflux.
There was a study that indicated alkaline water would have benefits for people with diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. A recent study with 100 people discovered a significance in whole blood viscosity by 6.3 percent compared to 3.36 percent with purified drinking water. This increases oxygen delivery throughout the body. Blood flowed more efficiently with alkaline water.
There is no argument that more studies need to be conducted to determine the scientific benefits of drinking alkaline water and consuming an alkaline diet.
In the meantime, proponents of alkaline water still believe that alkaline water has anti-aging properties, is colon-cleansing, supports the immune system, provides hydration, detoxifying properties, skin health, and weight loss.
